The First Aksi Kamisan (Thursdays Protest) In Prabowo's Era
Human rights activist Maria Catarina Sumarsih, whose son, Wawan, was killed in 1998, participates in the 837th Aksi Kamisan, or Thursday's Protest, in front of the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, Indonesia, on October 24, 2024. This action is the first during the presidency of Prabowo Subianto, who faces accusations of involvement in the abduction of pro-democracy activists in 1998. Prabowo is inaugurated as the 8th President of the Republic of Indonesia on October 20. This silent protest, featuring black umbrellas, takes place every Thursday since 2007, demanding that the government resolve cases of human rights violations in Indonesia.
