Junior Doctors Begin First Of Two All-out Strikes

Light shining on a placcard at the picket line Manchester Royal Infirmary in Manchester, Greater Manchester, England, United Kingdom on Tuesday 26th April 2016.48-hour strike starts by junior doctors across England - including an all-out stoppage from 08:00 to 17:00 BST during which, for the first time, there is to be no provision for emergency cover including in A&E and intensive care wards. Action prompted by an ongoing dispute with the govt over new working contracts that will be imposed across the NHS this summer and which the British Medical Association have launched a legal challenge over. Health Sec Jeremy Hunt says the new contracts will improve services and address concerns cited over variable outcomes in hospitals at different times of the week but the BMA have described the govt's approach as 'misleading'. In November Hunt offered a package of new concessions, including basic pay rising by 11% to a salary of £25,500, but this was rejected by the BM. (Photo by Jonathan Nicholson/NurPhoto)
