Crime Scene Investigates Fatal Police-Involved Shooting Which Killed Suspect Gary Worthy, Injured A Bystander And Police Officer Rich Wong In Jamaica Queens New York

Evidence markers mark the scene where a police-involved shooting occurs in Jamaica, Queens, United States, on November 19, 2024. At 5:35 pm, Tuesday afternoon, police respond to a robbery in progress inside 164-01 Hillside Avenue, which is the Village Market Grocery. Male suspect Gary Worthy enters to commit a robbery, and a gunshot is fired. At 6:24 pm, while police search for the suspect, they are flagged down by a witness who sees the suspect. At 6:30 pm, Tuesday evening, at 161 and Jamaica Avenue, officers approach the suspect, ask him to stop, and Worthy does not comply and instead runs away while showing a firearm. Officers return fire and kill the suspect. The officer is hit in the thigh and is expected to make a full recovery. Gary Worthy has 17 prior arrests and is on lifetime parole. Mayor Eric Adams and police officers criticize the criminal justice system for ''failing New Yorkers.'' A 26-year-old female bystander is shot in the leg and is in stable condition, 36-year-old NYPD officer Rich Wong is shot in the right leg and is in stable condition, and 57-year-old suspect Gary Worthy is dead after being shot by police in the face.
