Presidential guards pay respect to former King and unifier of modern Nepal, Prithivi Narayan Shah, during a ceremony in Kathmandu, Nepal, on January 11, 2025. Prithvi Narayan Shah is born on January 7, 1723, as the first child of Nara Bhupal Shah and Kaushalyawati in the Gorkha Palace. He ascends to the throne of the Gorkha Kingdom on April 3, 1743, and starts the unification of Nepal. He is credited with moving the royal seat of power from Gorkha to Kathmandu. Before the unification, Nepal is divided into 52 principalities. King Prithvi Narayan Shah successfully expands Nepal's borders to the Tista River in the east and the Chepe River in the west. After his death, his successors further expand Nepal's western borders to Kangada. (Photo by Subaas Shrestha/NurPhoto)
