Protest Continues In Nepal Over Construction Of Cable Car Project In Religious Land

Protestors demonstrate in Kathmandu, Nepal, on February 3, 2025, against the decision to construct a commercial cable car in the Mukkumlung area of the Pathibhara region. The protest, which is part of a broader movement against the construction of the cable car project in the Mukkumlung area, escalates. It dominantly takes over the eastern parts against the proposed cable car project in the Pathibhara area--known as the Mukkumlung region in Kirati scriptures--of eastern Nepal, affecting life in several hill districts of Koshi Province. The protesters claim that the project harms the environment, encroaches on local culture, and disrupts the livelihoods of the residents. The Mukkumlung Struggle Committee and the Cable Car Project Cancellation Struggle Committee warn of further protests if the project continues. The Pathibhara Mata Cable Car Company begins land leveling for the project earlier this week, sparking outrage among local activists. (Photo by Subaas Shrestha/NurPhoto)
