Amidst Tragic Elephant Train Accident Sri Lanka
Artist Janith Weersinghe performs live painting at the Fort Railway Station in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on February 20, 2025. During this time, a tragic train accident occurs in which six elephants, including two calves, die after being hit by the Batticaloa-Colombo express train, known as the 'Meenagaya,' between Gal Oya and Minneriya. Sri Lanka has an estimated 7,000 wild elephants, considered a national treasure. Killing or harming them is a criminal offense. There are calls for train operators to reduce speed and use horns in areas where elephants are known to cross tracks. (Photo by Akila Jayawardena/NurPhoto)
