Land Disputes In Indonesia

Residents of Polonia, Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia, engage in various activities while waiting to break their fast during the holy month of Ramadan on March 3, 2025. The Polonia area in Medan has a long and complex history of land ownership, which occasionally leads to disputes. Originally, this area is a tobacco plantation established in 1872 and known as ''Polonia,'' granted to Michalsky. Over the years, ownership of the land changes hands, and the area evolves into a residential neighborhood and an airport. After the former Polonia airport relocates, the region transitions into a commercial and residential area. To prevent future land disputes, the government must implement planned and sustainable spatial planning. (Photo by Sutanta Aditya/NurPhoto)
