Former King Gyanendra Shah Welcomed By Jhakris At Statue Unveiling, Returns To Political Scene
Former King Gyanendra Shaha receives blessings and a warm welcome from local jhakris (shamans) during the unveiling ceremony of a statue dedicated to his late father, King Birendra Shaha. Now politically active, Gyanendra's return to public life comes after a tumultuous period. In 2006, mass protests involving hundreds of thousands of people force him to relinquish his power to parliament. Two years later, the parliament votes to abolish the monarchy, and Gyanendra leaves the Royal Palace to live as a common citizen, on march 06, 2025. (Photo by Yunish Gurung/NurPhoto)
