An open-cast mine is seen on the outskirts of Jharia city in Dhanbad district, Jharkhand state, on March 7, 2025. Jharia coal mines start mining in 1894, covering about 110 square miles (280 square km). It consists of 23 large underground and nine large open-cast mines. About 600,000 people are engaged in these coal mines for their livelihood. Massive amounts of carbon dioxide are released into the atmosphere by coal fires.
