Queima Das Fitas In Porto, Portugal
Several thousand students gather in Porto, Portugal, for the annual parade of Queima das Fitas (translation: ribbon-burning). The Queima das Fitas is an annual tradition that takes place for over a century to make the city known to higher education finalists. Top hats and walking sticks are added to the academic attire to symbolize the end of studies, and each area of study wears different colors for these items. The event attracts thousands of spectators, usually friends and family members of the students. (Photo by David Oliveira/NurPhoto)
