Tourism Sector In Kashmir

Shikara boats are moored to the banks of Dal Lake while a boatman fishes in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on May 16, 2025. Following a deadly terror attack near south Kashmir's Pahalgam that kills 26 tourists, the Indian Armed Forces launch ''Operation Sindoor'' on May 7, 2025, targeting alleged terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Although a ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan brokered by the United States comes into effect on May 10, fear and uncertainty already devastate Kashmir's tourism sector. The approximately Rupees 8,000 crore tourism industry, which contributes 7% to the region's GDP and employs around 70,000 people, is now in crisis. Tourist spots empty, and hotels, tour operators, and local vendors face mass cancellations. With thousands of livelihoods at risk, the region reels from the renewed instability.
