D-Day commemorations begin in Normandy

Flag bearers prepare for a 72nd D-Day anniversary service of thanksgiving and wreath laying in the Jerusalem British War Cemetery, near the village of Chouain. The cemetery is the smallest war cemetery in Normandy and one of the smallest Commonwealth WWII cemeteries, with only 47 graves. The area around Chouain was the scene of bitter fighting in early June 1944 when, shortly after the liberation of Bayeux, a German armoured column attempted to retake the town. Jerusalem was established in June 1944, and at the time nearby farm buildings were used by the RAMC as an advanced dressing station. As the fighting moved further south, the cemetery was no longer used. On Sunday, 5 June 2016, in Bayeux, Calvados, Normandy, France. (Photo by Artur Widak/NurPhoto)
