NYPD officers and members of the FDNY work the scene after a man is taken into custody for allegedly stabbing his mother-in-law to death and injuring his brother-in-law before starting a fire at 45-18 Smart Street in Flushing, Queens, New York, United States, on October 2, 2025. On Thursday afternoon at approximately 1530 hours, police respond to a 911 call of an assault at 45-18 Smart Street, within the confines of the 109 Precinct. Upon arrival, officers observe a fire at the location. FDNY responds and extinguishes the fire. A 50-year-old woman named Qiujin Shi is discovered inside the location, unconscious and unresponsive with a stab wound to the abdomen, and a 17-year-old boy with multiple stab wounds about the body. EMS responds and transports the 50-year-old victim in critical condition to New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital where she is pronounced dead. A 17-year-old boy is also taken to New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital in stable condition. A person of interest is taken into custody and the investigation remains ongoing.
