Burundi Refugees in Rwanda

Kirehe, Rwanda on 3 June 2016: Hundreds of children and elderly who have fled Burundi are living with their families outside the UNHCR protected Mahama Refugee Camp in The Eastern Province of Rwanda. Many live with local families around the camp in rented rooms as local Rwandan families take in refugees to subsidise their income. Many of the the Burundi familes who live outside the UN camp have children who are not attending school but working in local “cash crop” industries to survive. According to the UNHCR the conflict in Burundi has left 250,000 Burundi citizens externally displaced in Rwanda, Uganda and the biggest influx of refugees has been to Tanzania.
