Samsir Lawedi, 55, a native of Kawasi village, stops fishing in 2020 because there are no more fish around the coast of Kawasi village. On September 3, 2024, in Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku, Indonesia, he cannot fish using nets on the beach because it is polluted by industrial waste flowing into the sea. Now, Mr. Samsir switches to construction work to support his family. The presence of mining damages the marine, mangrove, and coastal ecosystems. (Photo by Muhammad Fauzy/NurPhoto)
