Sand And Rock Mining In Merapi Volcano Slope

Trucks cross the Bebeng riverbed, which is a natural lava flow route from Merapi volcano, to transport sand and rocks from mining in Srumbung sub-district, Magelang, Central Java, on December 17, 2025. The mining location is in a disaster-prone area, which endangers safety and damages the environment within the Mount Merapi national park area. This raises concerns about disasters that threaten the villages below if there is a cold lava flow or hot clouds in the event of an eruption because there is no longer any vegetation acting as a natural barrier. However, economic pressures encourage workers to continue these activities. (Photo by Aditya Irawan/NurPhoto)
