Nepal Observes Martyr’s Day, Prime Minister Along With High Officials Pay Homage At Sahid Smarak
A troupe of the Nepal Army prepares to present a guard of honor at the Sahid Smarak in Kathmandu, Nepal, on January 30, 2026, Martyr's Day. Celebrated every year on Magh 16 (end of January), the country marks it with various programs in memory of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the establishment and restoration of democracy and freedom. The day is observed by remembering the struggling life and devotion of martyrs Shukra Raj Shastri, Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Dasharath Chand, and Ganga Lal Shrestha, as well as the contributions of other martyrs to the establishment of democracy in the country. A week-long Martyr's Week is also observed in memory of the brave martyrs who sacrificed their lives against the then Rana regime. The Rana rulers executed Shukra Raj Shastri in Teku-based Pachali, Dharma Bhakta Mathema at Sifal, and Ganga Lal Shrestha and Dasarath Chand at Shobha Bhagawati within a week while demanding independence.
