Archaeological History Of Indonesia

A replica of a figurative cave painting originating from South Sulawesi is displayed at the National Museum in Jakarta, Indonesia, on December 28, 2025. Art first appears on the surfaces of hard rock walls in the form of paintings, engravings, and carvings, collectively known as rock art. In general, the depicted forms include hand stencils, human figures, animals, and geometric lines. The oldest rock art in Indonesia emerges long before modern humans in Europe begin expressing themselves through paintings on cave walls and cliffs. Based on uranium-series dating, these paintings are approximately 51,200 years old. (Photo by Agoes Rudianto/NurPhoto)
