Rigaer Strasse Becomes Focus Of Gentrification Dispute
Andreas Doehler (R), who has become a spokesman for residents in Rigaer Strasse, and other residents give statements to the media under a banner that reads: "We want our street back!" on the sidewalk in Rigaer Strasse street on July 12, 2016 in Berlin, Germany. Rigaer Strasse, and especially the building at Rigaer Strasse 94 , have become the focus of the ongoing dispute over gentrification in Berlin that took a violent twist on July 9, when several thousand marching demonstrators clashed with police, leaving 123 police members injured. About a half dozen buildings in Rigaer and nearby Liebigstrasse have been occupied by squatters since the early 1990s, though residents of Rigaer Strasse 94 claim that in their building only a few squatters remain and that most residents have rental contracts and pay rent. According to media reports a London-based investor has bought Rigaer Strasse 94 and is seeking to renovate it. Berlin has seen property prices rise dramatically over the last 10 years as the city continues to attract large numbers of new residents. (Photo by Markus Heine/NurPhoto)
