Protest In Nepal Demanding Release Of Former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli Turns Violent, Multiple Injured And Arrested

Nepal Police arrest supporters and cadres of the Communist Party of Nepal- Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) after a clash in Kathmandu, Nepal, on March 29, 2026. Demonstrators take to the streets demanding the release of party chair and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who was arrested on March 28 over allegations related to the use of force during protests in September of the previous year. Tensions escalate as protesters reportedly throw stones, and police use baton charges to control the situation. The UML has announced nationwide protests following Oli's arrest, with demands for his release and the resignation of Home Minister Sudhan Gurung. Supporters call for an impartial investigation into incidents on September 8 and 9, 2025, and seek the scrapping of a report led by Gauri Bahadur Karki, which they claim is biased. The party also demands a fair investigation into acts of vandalism, arson, and looting during the protests, and legal action against those involved. Additionally, they stress the need for a probe into the alleged involvement of various non-governmental organizations. The new government under Prime Minister Balendra Shah has accused Oli in connection with deaths during the September 2025 protests, leading to charges related to homicide and his detention for investigation.
