Daily Life In Ontario

Traditional Japanese Hina Ningyo dolls are displayed during the Hinamatsuri (Doll Festival or Girls' Festival) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on March 1, 2026. The festival is celebrated each year in Japan on March 3. During the festival, people pray for the happiness and healthy growth of girls. Traditional Hina Ningyo dolls are displayed on platforms covered with red felt. The dolls are offered rice crackers and other food and wear costumes of the imperial court from the Heian period (794-1192). Families generally start to display the dolls in February and take them down immediately after the festival. Superstition suggests that displaying the dolls past March 4 will result in a late marriage for their daughters. (Photo by Creative Touch Imaging Ltd./NurPhoto)
