Repatriated Mahagauri Parvati Idol Reestablished On World Heritage Day In Nepal

Acting Mayor of Kathmandu Sunita Dangol, along with devotees, carries the idol of Goddess Mahagauri Parvati during a ceremonial procession for its reestablishment at its original shrine in Maru Tole, Kathmandu, on April 18, 2026. The sacred sculpture is moved with reverence and traditional rituals as it is taken from the Chhauni National Museum to its historic site, accompanied by prayers, offerings, and chanting, marking its return to public worship. The procession is part of the World Heritage Day observance and the cultural restoration of the deity at its original location. The sculpture was previously returned to Nepal from the United Kingdom after being stolen and had been preserved at the Chhauni National Museum before reinstatement.
