Animal India - Black-rumped Flameback Woodpecker - Dinopium Benghalense

A Black-rumped Flameback Woodpecker (Dinopium benghalense), also known as the Lesser Golden-backed Woodpecker or Lesser Goldenback, perches and drills into a tall coconut tree in Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on April 27, 2026. This woodpecker, endemic to the Indian subcontinent and Sri Lanka, is known for its characteristic rattling-whinnying call and undulating flight. It is one of the few woodpeckers observed in urban areas and is distinguished by its black throat and black rump. (Photo by Soumyabrata Roy/NurPhoto)
