World Press Freedom Day Celebrations In Tunisia
Demonstrators display a large banner bearing a portrait of detained Tunisian journalist Mourad Zeghidi and reading in French, ''J'assume'' (I take responsibility) while shouting slogans during a rally outside the headquarters of the National Union of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT) in Tunis, Tunisia, on May 2, 2026. The gathering is held in solidarity with detained journalists Mourad Zeghidi and Zied El-Heni, as Tunisian media workers mark World Press Freedom Day. Celebrated annually on May 3, World Press Freedom Day highlights the fundamental principles of press freedom, assesses the state of media independence worldwide, and commemorates the 1991 Windhoek Declaration calling for a free, independent, and pluralistic press. It was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993. (Photo by Chedly Ben Ibrahim/NurPhoto)
