Basilica Of La Verna Franciscan Sanctuary With Arched Portico And Bell Tower, Tuscany

The cloister courtyard of the Franciscan Sanctuary of La Verna in the Casentino mountains, Arezzo province, Tuscany, Italy, is photographed on April 9, 2026, through a gothic-arched leaded-glass window. Residual late-season snow covers the low cloister roof and corners of the flagstone yard, which is unusual for early spring at 1,128 meters elevation. A stone well with a wooden pitched canopy and hanging iron bucket occupies the center of the courtyard. The warm afternoon light illuminates the sandstone monastery walls. Founded in 1213 after Count Orlando Cattani donated Monte della Verna to St. Francis of Assisi, the sanctuary has functioned as an active Franciscan community for over eight centuries, with its architecture remaining substantially unchanged since the medieval period.
