Siliguri Corridor - Road Beside Teesta River

The Teesta River flows through North Bengal near the strategic Siliguri Corridor, also known as the ''Chicken's Neck,'' which connects India with Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan. The river, particularly around Sevoke and Kalimpong, has experienced severe damage from Himalayan flash floods, resulting in human suffering and infrastructure loss. In 2023, a glacial lake outburst flood in North Sikkim left thousands homeless and caused numerous casualties. In certain areas along the river, people have constructed bamboo dwellings. Recent Chinese involvement in a Teesta River project in Bangladesh has raised security concerns for India. The Border Roads Organisation and NHIDCL continue to work in regions adjacent to the Teesta River to ensure the road remains undamaged by future floods and nearby settlements are safeguarded.
