Landslides Issue In Sikkim - India - Himalayan Road Repairs During Monsoon
Landslides occur in India's Eastern Himalayan state of Sikkim, with heavy rainfall and fragile geological conditions frequently interrupting road construction and damaging infrastructure, particularly during the monsoon season. Over 27% of national highways in the area are located in high-susceptibility zones for landslides. The process of road construction often involves dumping debris into valleys, which can create new active landslide zones. Due to the heavy monsoon rains, landslides have occurred at various locations, leaving large boulders and mud scattered across the roads. Repair work is currently underway, carried out by both local male and female road repair workers, and black rain clouds are rolling in from the mountainside. This road was once part of the historic Silk Route, which connected India and China, as seen in Sikkim on April 18, 2026. (Photo by Soumyabrata Roy/NurPhoto)
