German War Cemetery Passo Della Futa, Firenzuola, Apennines, Italy

Rows of flat basalt grave markers cover the terraced lawns of the Deutsche Kriegsgraberstatte at Passo della Futa, near Firenzuola, on the Tuscany-Emilia Romagna Apennine ridge, Italy, on April 6, 2026. One of the largest German war cemeteries in Italy, the site holds the remains of approximately 30,683 soldiers of the German Wehrmacht killed during World War II. Designed by architect Dieter Oesterlen and inaugurated in 1969, the cemetery is managed by the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgraberfursorge. The German federal flag flies above the administrative building overlooking the rows of graves. (Photo by Matteo Della Torre/NurPhoto)
