Lower Antelope Canyon

Lower Antelope Canyon, a V-shaped slot canyon near Page, Arizona, is known for its vibrant colors, narrow passages, and adventurous, stair-heavy hiking path. Located on Navajo Tribal Land, it is accessible only through guided tours operated by authorized Navajo companies. The canyon is formed by the erosion of Navajo Sandstone due to flash flooding, with rainwater running into the basin above, picking up speed and sand as it rushes into the narrow passageways. Over time, the passageways erode, deepening the corridors and smoothing the hard edges to form flowing shapes. (Photo by Thomas O'Neill/NurPhoto)
