Long Island Rail Road Strike
A sign above the Southern State Parkway warns commuters of a potential Long Island Rail Road strike in Central Islip, New York, on May 14, 2026. The Long Island Rail Road is set to strike after failing to reach agreements regarding employment terms. The last strike occurred in June 1994 and lasted two days. The current potential strike is scheduled for May 17, 2026, if an agreement cannot be reached. A strike would disrupt hundreds of thousands of Long Islanders and New Yorkers who rely on the Long Island Rail Road for transportation to and from New York City and various parts of Long Island.
