Nepal Celebrates 19th Republic Day
Nepal's Armed Police Force participate in a parade during the Republic Day celebration in Kathmandu, Nepal, on May 29, 2026. Nepal observes the end of May as Republic Week, commemorating the declaration of a republic by the first meeting of the popularly elected Constituent Assembly on Jestha 15, 2065 BS. This followed the People's Movement II, which led to the end of the monarchy and the re-establishment of democracy in 2006. The first meeting of the Constituent Assembly on May 28, 2008, declared Nepal a Federal Democratic Republic. Although the parliament at that time was dissolved after failing to promulgate a new constitution, Nepal adopted its first republican constitution with federalism in 2015, marking a significant step in ending a decade-long Maoist insurgency.
