Protests And Clashes Persist Outside Delaney Hall Amid Hunger Strike

Protesters gather outside Delaney Hall in Newark, New Jersey, in support of immigrants on hunger strike and detained inside on May 28, 2026. A hunger strike by detainees inside Delaney Hall enters its seventh day. Protesters rally outside in support and call for the detention center to be closed. Multiple arrests are made, and reports emerge of alleged mistreatment of detainees by I.C.E. agents inside the center. I.C.E. has been transferring detainees out of the detention center in response to the hunger strike. Federal agents are present, using batons, chemical irritants, and pepper balls against the protesters. Members of the press are also reportedly targeted. Family members are not allowed visitation, while others arrive to meet detainees who have been released. (Photo by Neil Constantine/NurPhoto)
