Baya Weavers Start Weave Nests With The Start Of Breeding Season In Nepal

Baya Weavers weave nests on the branches of a tree in Kathmandu, Nepal, on May 30, 2026. These birds, found across the Indian Subcontinent, are known for their architectural skill in building nests from hay and grasses. The monsoon season marks their mating period, during which male Baya Weavers construct nests that withstand rain and wind, while also being out of reach of predators. Female Baya Weavers inspect the nests and, upon approval, the male continues building, with the couple eventually residing and breeding there. The birds have a dull yellow color with black markings, resembling sparrows, but males become brighter with yellow and black markings during the breeding season. The chirping of these birds is noticeable to people living nearby. (Photo by Subaas Shrestha/NurPhoto)
