Baya Weaver Builds Intricate Hanging Nest During Breeding Season In Kathmandu, Nepal
A Baya Weaver (Ploceus philippinus) constructs a nest from strips of grass and plant fibers suspended from a tree branch in Kathmandu, Nepal, on May 31, 2026. Known for its nest-building abilities, the species creates hanging nests during the monsoon breeding season to attract mates and provide shelter for offspring. The nests feature a bulbous chamber and a narrow entrance to protect eggs and chicks from predators. Females inspect the nests before selecting a mate, after which the structure is completed for breeding. Found across the Indian subcontinent, Baya Weavers are seen near grasslands, wetlands, and agricultural areas. During the breeding season, males display yellow and black plumage, while females and non-breeding males have a sparrow-like appearance. (Photo by Safal Prakash Shrestha/NurPhoto)
