Anti-ICE Protests Amid Inmate Hunger Strike At Delaney Hall Immigration Detention Facility

Governor Mikie Sherrill speaks about demonstrations and law enforcement activity at Delaney Hall Immigration Detention Center in Newark, New Jersey, on May 31, 2026. Peaceful protests regarding the treatment of detainees, who are reportedly on a hunger strike, took place at the Delaney Hall Immigration Detention Facility for most of the day. The situation turned violent overnight from Saturday into Sunday morning when fires were set and property was damaged. State Police have announced that the closure will remain in effect indefinitely, and a curfew is in place from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily until further notice. Governor Sherrill has also stated that limited visitation will resume at noon on Sunday, with regular visitation hours for families of detainees to be restored starting Monday.
