National Coordinator Of Education Workers And Police Clash In Mexico City

Members of the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) march from the Angel of Independence to the Zocalo in Mexico City, Mexico, on June 1, 2026, where they set up a protest camp. The demonstration calls for the repeal of the 2007 ISSSTE Law, which they claim affects their pensions and retirement benefits, as well as demands for salary increases, the reinstatement of dismissed teachers, and the opening of a direct dialogue with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. Upon arrival at the Zocalo, clashes occur between CNTE members and police, resulting in injuries to two teachers, one seriously, and one bystander. Human rights observers report that police officers from the Mexico City Secretariat of Citizen Security use force, including high-caliber explosives and rubber bullets, against protesters and journalists.
