Ancient Monumental Olive Trees In Ostuni, Puglia, Italy

The deeply gnarled trunk of a centuries-old olive tree rises above the red soil of an olive grove in Ostuni, Brindisi province, Puglia, on May 09, 2026. The Apulian region hosts thousands of olive trees estimated to be over a thousand years old, many legally protected as monumental trees under Italian law. Since 2013, Puglia has been affected by an agricultural crisis caused by Xylella fastidiosa, a bacterial pathogen that has killed millions of olive trees across the region.
