Delaney Hall Protests Continue As Detainee Strikes Enter Third Week In New Jersey

Protests and strikes continue outside and inside Delaney Hall detention center in Newark, New Jersey, on June 5, 2026, after fifteen days. Detainees inside Delaney Hall are on a hunger and labor strike, despite many initiators being transferred elsewhere. Protesters outside encounter a more assertive staff from GEO Group, the company operating the center, as Newark Police have stated that facility protection is GEO's responsibility. ICE has resumed maintaining their areas, with police taking a more hands-off approach for the moment. ICE deploys pepper balls against protesters. As protesters attempt to block traffic in and out of the facility, GEO Group staff use pepper spray and engage physically, with reports of cars being used in a dangerous manner. A car strikes a press journalist in a potential hit-and-run incident, resulting in the journalist being hospitalized. No emergency medical services are immediately present when police are informed. Arrests are made. (Photo by Neil Constantine/NurPhoto)
