Merchants Block Streets Due To CNTE Teachers' Blockade

Merchants in the Historic Center of Mexico City protest against members of the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) who have set up a protest camp, on June 8, 2026. The teachers are demanding the repeal of the 2007 ISSSTE Law, claiming it negatively impacts their pensions and retirement benefits, as well as seeking salary increases, the reinstatement of dismissed teachers, and the opening of a direct dialogue with Mexico City President Claudia Sheinbaum. The merchants state they have suffered losses amounting to millions of pesos and can no longer sustain their businesses due to the protest camp. (Photo by Gerardo Vieyra/NurPhoto)
