Shredded Polythene Being Dried
Polythene collected from various places is washed in the Buriganga River in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on June 15, 2026. The washing and drying of polythene in open areas along the riverbank result in plastic fragments mixing into the river, forming a plastic layer on the riverbed. This layer affects dredging efforts and the river's navigability, impacting water flow and groundwater recharge. Chemicals and microplastics from the polythene are also affecting oxygen levels in the water and aquatic biodiversity. (Photo by Maruf Rahman/NurPhoto)
