Bangladesh: Critically Endangered Elongated Tortoise Chicks Hatched At Chattogram Zoo

Five critically endangered Elongated Tortoise (Indotestudo elongata) chicks line up along the curved blue concrete border of a water pond at the Chattogram Zoo in Chattogram, Bangladesh, on June 22, 2026. These chicks are the result of successful artificial breeding at the zoo. The Elongated Tortoise, native to parts of Asia including Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Myanmar, and Thailand, faces severe extinction risks due to habitat loss and poaching. This breeding success represents a significant milestone in wildlife conservation and biodiversity preservation efforts. (Photo by Zakir Hossain/NurPhoto)
