The Sinking North Coastal Java
A residential house is partially submerged by encroaching seawater in Pekalongan, Central Java, Indonesia, on June 25, 2026. Rapid land subsidence, combined with rising sea levels, affects the northern coast of Java. Sinking rates reach 10-15 cm annually in cities like Pekalongan, Semarang, and Demak, displacing dozens of communities as their homes become permanently uninhabitable due to chronic flooding.
