Wildlife Keel Billed Toucan Costa Rica
A keel-billed toucan (Ramphastos sulfuratus) near Boca Tapada in the San Carlos canton of Alajuela province, Costa Rica, on June 29, 2026. The national bird of Belize, the species is known for its oversized multicolored bill, which accounts for roughly one third of its body length yet is surprisingly lightweight due to its hollow bone structure. Costa Rica covers just 0.03 percent of Earth's landmass yet harbors nearly 5 percent of all species estimated to exist on the planet, making it one of the most biodiverse countries in the world.
