Birds Scarlet Macaws Costa Rica Rainforest
Scarlet macaws (Ara macao) perch on a tree in the rainforest near Boca Tapada in the San Carlos canton of Alajuela province, Costa Rica, on June 30, 2026. Known for their vivid red, yellow, and blue plumage, these birds are typically found in humid evergreen forests from southern Mexico to the Amazon Basin. The species mates for life and is often seen traveling and foraging in bonded pairs or small flocks. Costa Rica, covering just 0.03 percent of Earth's landmass, harbors nearly 5 percent of all species estimated to exist on the planet, making it one of the most biodiverse countries in the world.
