The Most Dangerous Snake In Costa Rica

A fer-de-lance (Bothrops asper) is photographed during a wildlife photography workshop at La Tarde, a remote off-grid eco-lodge in Costa Rica, on July 6, 2026. The fer-de-lance is widely considered the most dangerous snake in Central America and is responsible for the majority of serious snakebite incidents in Costa Rica. This large, highly venomous pit viper is found in a range of habitats from lowland rainforests to agricultural areas and is known for its aggressive defensive behavior when disturbed.
