Indian Power Sector - Electricity - Electrician Safety In India
Electricity employees connect a house to the power supply while climbing an outdoor tall electric pole and working with wires that connect the electric meter to the main switch, lights, and other switches at Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on July 18, 2026. India has the world's third-largest electricity sector, with a total installed capacity exceeding 520 GW. Electrician safety in India is often poor due to an informal workforce and a lack of standardized training. Workers frequently lack essential Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as insulated gloves, a safety helmet, and flame-resistant clothing, and instead rely on rudimentary tools. Electrical accidents claim over 18,000 lives annually in India. The primary causes of these fatalities are accidental contact with live wires, violation or neglect of safety procedures, and lack of adequate supervision. India's peak power demand reached 270 GW as surging cooling needs drive consumption. While clean energy met a record 50% of the country's mid-day demand, the grid is facing evening shortages.
