Protest to prevent privatization of water and sewage services
Thousands of people took to the Rio downtown streets to protest against the privatization of water and sewage services in the State of Rio de Janeiro, on Septmeber 6, 2016. Currently the service is provided by CEDAE - State Company for Water and Wastewater that is an expensive and inefficient company. Many of the protesters are residents of the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. Despite receiving the services of CEDAE are not charged for the service in most cases, because of the violence of the communities and the low purchasing power of its residents, it is not possible to install water meters and perform charging for treated water service and collection of sewage . With the privatization of CEDAE services, a more efficient management of services would be possible and there could be money for the depollution of Guanabara Bay. (Photo by Luiz Souza/NurPhoto)
