Santa Claus in Amsterdam

Dutch actor Patrick Mathurin (L) dressed as Sinterklaas (Santa Claus), meets people in Amsterdam, on November 5, 2016. Actor Mathurin is one of the anti-racism demonstrators who protest against the traditional figure of the Black Peter, the traditional black-faced companion of Saint Nicolas during the Sinterklaas or Saint Nicolas festival, that has become the subject of much controversy in recent years as some people believe it to be a racist caricature. The character first appeared in its current form in an 1850 book by Jan Schenkman and is commonly depicted as a blackamoor from Spain. (Photo by Romy Arroyo Fernandez/NurPhoto)
