After the Olympics, Rio de Janeiro is on the verge of bankruptcy

The Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro is going through a rough patch that worsen more and more. The financial crisis has reached alarming levels and a package of public spending cuts that include increased consumer taxes and taxation of salaries for civil servants of the State and of retirees who receive by the State Government of Rio de Janeiro. Many categories of State civil service are planning a general strike that could cause chaos in the public services provided by the State Government. On Monday, 7 November 2016, thousands of civil servants occupied the staircases of the ALERJ (where work the State representatives of Rio de Janeiro) to protest against the austerity measures. Health and education services are already at critical levels of malfunction. (Photo by Luiz Souza/NurPhoto)
