27th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution

Students of Czech universities gathered in Albertov, on November 17, 2016. The Velvet Revolutionor Gentle Revolution was a non-violent transition of power in what was then Czechoslovakia. The period of upheaval and transition took place from November 17 to December 29, 1989. Popular demonstrations against the one-party government of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia combined students and older dissidents. The end result was the end of 41 years of Stalinist rule in Czechoslovakia, and the subsequent dismantling of the planned economy and conversion to a parliamentary republic.a neighborhood near Vyšehrad, where the student protests started on November 17th, 1989 (Photo by Honza Mudra/NurPhoto)
